Masking tape, also known as sticky tape, is a type of pressure-sensitive tape made from thin, easy-to-tear paper with a readily releasable adhesive. This crepe paper masking tape exhibits high adhesion, high cohesion, and excellent holding power.
The adhesive plays a key role in its usefulness, allowing the tape to be removed easily without leaving residue or damaging the surface. Masking tapes are available in various adhesive strengths, rated on a 1–100 scale. Most painting applications typically require a tape in the 50 range. Household masking tape uses a weaker paper and lower-grade adhesive.
Ready-to-use masking tapes are available in different widths and lengths. Customized sizes and lengths are also offered, suitable for temperature ranges from 60°C to 180°C.
For high-temperature masking applications, the adhesive is specially formulated with a rubber-based compound designed to withstand elevated temperatures. It also offers good resistance to solvents, oil, and water.
